San Diego signed WR Laurent Robinson today. This will be his fifth year in the NFL. He was drafted in the third round by Atlanta, and spent two seasons with them. Next, he went to St. Louis where he spent his last two seasons. His career stats are not phenomenal, but with Rivers throwing him the ball, he could become elite.
Career stats: 89 Receptions, 1000 Yards, 26.3 Yards per game, 11.2 yards per catch, 4 Touchdowns.
The receiver situation is pretty crowded right now. Vincent Jackson and Patrick Crayton are locks. Seyi Ajirotutu and Vincent Brown are likely to be on the team. Kelley Washington was re-signed as well, and Richard Goodman will be kept for special teams. That’s six WR’s that are predicted to make the team. Add one more. With the signing of Robinson, re-signing Malcom Floyd seems very unlikely. Kevin Acee from the San Diego Union Tribune reported this about the signing.

Don’t think this means they’re done shopping for WR, but he has made lots of catches in NFL.”If the Chargers aren’t done shopping for receivers, who’s next? Rivers will make Robinson better, as he does with every receiver. Robinson is a guy to play in the slot, not the outside. The signing is questionable, knowing that the Chargers need a legit number two reciever. Crayton, Ajirotutu, Brown, and maybe even Goodman are all slot recievers. Jackson is the only guy who can play the outside consistently. With Robinson now a Charger, the competition at camp will just get more intense. Floyd is also expected to make a decision today. If he chooses less money to stay in San Diego, Rivers will be VERY happy with his options this season.
